Pregnant woman killed, baby delivered via C-section after shooting in Rexdale,Canada

Toronto police say a pregnant woman who was a passenger inside a vehicle in Rexdale was shot and killed late last night.

It happened in the area of John Garland Boulevard and Jamestown Crescent at around 11 p.m.

Police say the woman and three other people were inside the vehicle when the gunfire broke out.

Several shots were fired and the pregnant woman, who was sitting in the back of the vehicle, was struck.

The other occupants of the vehicle were not injured, police said.

The woman, who was about 20 weeks pregnant, was taken to Etobicoke General Hospital but later died. Her child, police say, was delivered via emergency C-section and transferred to a Toronto trauma centre.

The newborn's condition is not known at this time.

Police say it is too early to tell if the pregnant woman was targeted in the shooting.

Investigators have not yet released any suspect description.

Officers are reviewing video in the area and looking into the possibility that the suspect or suspects fired the shots from a vehicle.

Homicide detectives are on scene and anyone with information about the case is asked to contact investigators.
